Numicon is a world leading math program for children aged 4 - year 5
At THE STUDY ROOM, our math environment is supportive and student-centred. We gauge a child's maths concept and respond appropriately with levelled activities. Children are in small groups of up to four. Each child works on exercises and activities set at his / her independent level. We aim to motivate children to enjoy maths. Maths is traditionally learned by first doing many small problems. Then the small problems are put together to solve bigger problems. For instance, in order to solve algebraic equations, being knowledgeable about addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is a must. Unfortunately, there are many challenges in learning these basic maths skills. Words and their use are confusing. Numbers are not objects - they cannot be picked up and explored. Instead they are a concept. Some children find the sequencing of numbers and the place-value system difficult to grasp. At THE STUDY ROOM, we understand the barriers to Maths learning and strive to break down these barriers. To achieve this, we have chosen to use the Numicon Math Programme.
Numicon shows children what an entire group of a number looks like in a pattern and explores what that group looks like with a variety of resources and alongside patterns of other numbers. In this way, a sense of number and how it relates to other numbers is strongly built into a child's understanding. Numicon teaches children about numbers and what they mean, before and alongside counting and patterning activities. This way of teaching is supportive to all students, but particularly those requiring a visual, hands-on and explicit style. Numicon develops fluency by using a visual, practical base to develop conceptual understanding and fluent recall. It helps children to reason mathematically through the use of concrete objects and spoken language to explain and justify. Numicon also develops children into confident problem-solvers.
